St Crux August 29th 2024

As usual everything was immaculately organised before the day, which was just as well as our gallant leader Sheila was taken poorly and was unable to be there!! Whilst she coughed and spluttered through the day York Rotary responded to the cry and everyone performed exactly as they had been trained!

At 8.00am the ‘team’ arrived and by 9.30am everything including gazebos, tables, chairs and signage, stalls and cafe was up and ready for the punters!  The Café looked really inviting thanks to the generous donations from Rotarians and partners. The Home Produce Stall was stunning with lots of homemade delicacies including the ever popular jars of jam and chutney.  We had some rather ‘posh’ bric-a-brac which, along with the more usual items was all displayed attractively. The Ladies Accessories and As New Gifts stall, which had all been prepared and priced earlier by Sheila and her ‘ladies’, was as eye catching as ever ready to attract the punters in. Books were laid out in the boxes in alphabetical order and collection buckets were at the ready to receive donations!! AMAZING!!

The weather was on our side and we had a steady flow of customers all day with the majority being tourists who were attracted by the colourful display on offer. Again at the end of the day everyone had a job to do and we were all packed up and off the premises by the 4.00pm deadline!

So….. I am delighted to announce that we made a record amount of profit for a St Crux event! A grand total of £1616 which is a true testament to Sheila’s prior organisation and the hard work of all involved before, during and after the event.

On the day we had an army of York Rotarians, partners and friends as well as Friends of York Rotary erecting and dismantling gazebos, carrying tables and chairs, manning the stalls, donation buckets, and zettles and running the café. Toddy kindly provided his van again to collect and deliver all the items from and back to Val’s garage and other drivers came at the beginning and end of the day to transport goods to and from Sheila’s and my garages. Many Rotarians and partners provided home made cakes and goods for the Café and Home Produce Stall and many people also provided items to sell on the other stalls. Others had been involved before the event in sorting and pricing items to sell. A great example of Rotary working together!

I would like to thank everyone who supported the event and me as temporary Leader in Sheila’s absence – we did good folks!!
