Piano recital, Gerard and Manna Tam

For the final one of my “talented young musicians after-lunch performances” we were privileged to hear first-rate and beautiful playing by our youngest performers this year, Gerard and Manna Tam. Their techniques were very impressive and they both brought a sensitivity to the music which, for me at least, was spell-binding.

Gerard began with a Prelude and Fugue in D minor from Bach’s “48 Preludes and Fugues”, showing great dexterity, and, particularly in the fugue, bringing out each voice with great clarity. He then played the slow movement from Beethoven’s very well-known Pathétique Sonata, again demonstrating a beautiful touch.

Manna then played two delightful pieces, the first movement of a Mozart Sonata in F, and an Impromptu by Schubert. Both were beautifully executed and showed a maturity well beyond her years.

This was a most enjoyable 20 minutes of excellent playing – concluding the opportunities we have given this year to young musicians to play to an unfamiliar but clearly receptive audience. So a huge  “well done” to the Tams, and to all others who have performed for us this year!

But in fact, not quite the last – I’ve invited Alannah Saphir, the excellent flautist who played for us in the autumn, to play a couple more pieces at the President’s Lunch (not to mention the Rotary Choir, of course, although it might be a bit of a stretch to call ourselves “promising young musicians”!).
