February 4, 2025 marked another milestone in the development of York Community Woodland when the Lord Mayor of York visits a part of the site specifically designated for quiet contemplation.

Located in the southwest corner of the woodland, it has been chosen to honour the contributions of all the charities that have given their services and support to the York community for many generations.

During the consultation on the project in 2021 City of York Council accepted a proposal from the three York Rotary Clubs that Charities Contribution to the Community should be recognised in the project masterplan. Forest England, decided on an easily accessible two-acre site and during the last two years over 700 native species trees have been planted and are flourishing.

Celebrating Charities Contribution to the Community

Speaking on behalf of the three York Rotary Clubs  Mike Hay,  said :-

As individuals, we acknowledge the worth of any charity by supporting them financially or with our time. However, there are very few ways of acknowledging the overall positive contributions charities make to the well-being of our Society. Our VISION was for York Community Woodland to design an area within the project specifically to honour all local charities. During the last 25 years, the three York Rotary Clubs have supported in cash or kind over 200 local charities and are proud to be  Champions for such a group of dedicated people.

We thank the City and Forest England for everything they have done to make it happen.

Cllr Margaret Wells, The Lord Mayor of York said: -

Recognising Charities' contributions to the community has been one of my aims during my year of office and I must thank Rotary for the initiative and congratulate all who have been involved in creating such a tangible and sustainable way of acknowledging the value of so many of the mainly volunteers who give their time and commitment to helping others.
