GoodGym is a unique and dynamic charity that encourages people of all ages to combine fitness training with doing good in the community.

On June 19th Ed Woollard and Vicky Hearson gave us an insight into their work. Set up in York in 2017 (by Egg Cameron, who was for many years also a “Friend of York Rotary” before she moved away from the area) they meet up regularly for a run, walk or cycle, ending up at a location where help has been requested in the community – President Paul mentioned one occasion where they dug a 70-metre trench for drainage at his local allotments.
GoodGym’s range of activities is very broad; they have recently been asked to test the battery resilience of motability scooters by riding them around York for hours! They also help older people with friendship visits to relieve loneliness, and they deliver leaflets around the city, paint walls, repair fences and do litter-picking. The list is endless.

Their enthusiasm and commitment to the local community was clearly very much in tune with Rotary’s ethos and prompted thoughts about how we might work more closely together…. Helping at future Dragon Boat events is one obvious avenue that will be pursued and there might be other similar events where help can be provided!
