Check the date Local Regulations Insurance Cover Protection Policy Advice is available from the Club Protection Officer, David McAulay Rotagraph - Editor - Robin Rich/Bobby Hughes Rotagraph was first published in 1951 and has appeared monthly since. It is available from the first week of each month. Articles for publication should be sent to the Editor by the end of the preceding month please. Club Service - Chairman - Graham Wilford A varied programme of speakers is being arranged and full details are included on the diary page. Community Service - Chairman - Mike Miller The club sponsors candidates for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and a candidate for the Ocean Youth Trust. These students undertook their awards in July and August and spoke to the club about their experiences in January 2010. It has been decided to support three students in 2010 and the selection process will start later in the year. Blood Pressure Day is on Saturday April 17th 2010, in co-operation with the two other Rotary Clubs in York, when the public in three centres around York will be invited to have a free blood pressure check. Our centre experienced keen interest and was kept busy throughout the day taking over 280 blood pressures. The old folks outing to Sinnington was successful on 30th June and the event will be repeated in 2010. The new York Arclight homeless centre has been supported with a donation of woodworking and other tools for their training workshop. The next committee meeting is on Wednesday 17th March at 19.15 at the home of Brian Houghton.. Dragon Boat Committee - Chairman - David Impey The 2009 Challenge on the 12th July 2009 was very successful and for full details please go to the dragon boat site. The date for the 2010 Challenge is 11th July 2010. Preparations are now being made for the 2010 Challenge and expressions of interest can be registered with David Thompson. The next committee meeting has been arranged for 30th November 2009 at 16.30 at Chris Birch's office. The dragon boat web site is directly linked to the club site just click on the dragon for full details of the results, arrangements, teams and race card. Fellowship - Joint Chairmen - David McAulay / Graham Maskery The dates of events, confirmed and provisional are on the diary page. Provisional arrangements are marked with an asterisk. Foundation/International - Chairman - Adrian Radford The club has decided to bring together the work of Foundation and International under one committee. At International level, the site at Foundation Newsletters provides valuable information on many Foundation projects( please note if you have a slow connection this site may take a while to download) . Assistance has gone to Sri Lanka towards the low cost homes project supported by District 1040 and a cheque for £500 has been sent. The matching project with the Knysna club is progressing well with funds committed from the host club Knysma, their District 9350, the sponsor club, York, our District 1040, and the Rotary Foundation. The project in South Africa will provide equipment for Early Development Centres, Literacy Centres, and training for carers and mothers. Aquaboxes have been despatched each year to assist with disasters abroad as they occur. Other projects supported include "Mercy Ships", the Hope and Homes Project in Africa, Karen Hill Tribes Trust and International Children's Trust for Gayathri. Speakers are being arranged for club meetings in February 2010 on international topics. The club enjoyed a reunion with Erlangen and Aubusson in May 2009 in Dresden and a repeat event is being held in Sarlat in France May 13-16th 2010. Fundraising - Joint Chairmen - David Jesper/John Russell The 100 Club is now the 100 Plus Club! New entrants always welcome - see David Fotheringham. The regular bric-a-bac sales are arranged for 2010. The committee is arranging a Valentine Day's Lunch on 14th February as a Fund Raising event at Stockton on Forest Village Hall. The possibility of identifying another fund raising event is being considered, but the committee is concerned not to over extend members commitment as the committee also provides the stalls and support on the North Bank for the Dragon Boat Race each year. The next committee meeting is on Friday 15th January 2010 at 11.45 at the Churchill. Membership - Chairman - Kevin Grogan A Membership Proposals Sub Committee has been set up to meet proposed members who are not necessarily well known to Club members, to explain Rotary aims and obligations. Speaker Finders - Chairman - Trevor Phillips The speakers are listed on the diary page and provisional arrangements are marked with an asterisk. Vocational Service - Chairman - Frank Paterson Mock interviews were arranged in 2009 at the Joseph Rowntree School by a team of Rotarians. These have been held at the end of the summer term for a number of years. Feed back from the school is that the experience has been most useful to the pupil, when it comes to the "real thing", be it an interview for University or a job. These will be undertaken in July again next year. A Fifth Joint York Rotary Clubs Technology Competition for local schools was held on 10th March 2009 at the National Railway Museum and fifty three teams of four students entered. Sponsorship was kindly provided by the Shepherd Building Group and North Yorkshire Business and Education. Plans are well in hand for it to be repeated on 16th March 2010 at the National Railway Museum.
