THE FOUNDATION COMMITTEE

2007 AGM Report

This year we have counselled a Peace scholar at Bradford, Maria Saifin Effendi from Islamabad, Pakistan. She is keen to make clear the important role of women in society there.

We have also counselled two scholars at York University; these are Jillian Hume from Pennsylvania who is doing an MA in Comparative Politics - she is working as a lawyer for the US government's Veterans Administration. Also there is Ayumi Tabuchi from near Nagasaki, who is studying English language and literature for a year as part of her undergraduate course. She is planning a career as a primary school teacher in Japan.

Unfortunately the Rotary Foundation have now frozen their contribution to the scholars at $26,000. This means that in future only scholars will be able to come who have some other source of funding in addition to Foundation. Next year there are only two coming to York in contrast to six this year.

Rotary Foundation urges all Rotarians to give $100 per year. To move us a small way further towards this target I have been raffling a bottle of malt whisky once a month in the second half of the year raising about £20 each time - it all helps.
